USA For Africa - We Are The World

USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa), was the name under which forty-five predominantly U.S. artists, led by Harry Belafonte, Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie, recorded the hit single "We Are the World" in 1985. The song was a US and UK Number One for the collective in April of that year. The considerable profits from the enterprise went to the USA for Africa Foundation, which used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa; critics, however, claim that this money went directly to the (often military) governments of the affected countries rather than the people. A recording of the live performance was released with the Live Aid DVD set released on November 8, 2004.

Toto - Africa

(1982) Toto was formed in Los Angeles in 1978 by David Paich (b. June 21, 1954, Los Angeles; keyboards, vocals), Steve Lukather (b. October 21, 1957, Los Angeles; guitar, vocals), Bobby Kimball (b. Robert Toteaux, March 29, 1947, Vinton, LA; vocals), Steve Porcaro (b. September 2, 1957, Connecticut; keyboards), David Hungate (b. Texas; bass), and Jeff Porcaro (b. April 1, 1954, Hartford, CT; d. August 5, 1992, Hidden Hills, CA; drums). Paich was the son of arranger Marty Paich; the Porcaros were the sons of percussionist Joe Porcaro. The bandmembers had met in high school and at studio sessions in the 1970s, when they became some of the busiest session musicians in the music business. Paich, Hungate, and Jeff Porcaro wrote songs for and performed on Silk Degrees, the multi-million-selling 1976 album that combined pop, rock, and disco elements into a slick combination which heavily influenced mainstream pop music. Toto released its self-titled debut album in October 1978, and it hit the Top Ten, sold two-million copies, and spawned the gold Top Ten single "Hold the Line." The gold-selling Hydra (October 1979) and Turn Back (January 1981) were less successful, but Toto IV (April 1982) was a multi-platinum Top Ten hit, featuring the number-one hit "Africa" and the Top Tens "Rosanna" (about Lukather's girlfriend, movie star Rosanna Arquette) and "I Won't Hold You Back." At the 1982 Grammys, "Rosanna" won awards for Record of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Instrumental Arrangement With Vocal; and Toto IV won awards for Album of the Year, Best Engineered Recording, and Best Producer (the group). In 1984, a third Porcaro brother, Mike (b. May 29, 1955), joined the group on bass, replacing Hungate. Then lead singer Kimball quit and was replaced by Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen (b. May 15, 1951, Wyoming, MI). Toto's fifth album, Isolation (November 1984), went gold, but was a commercial disappointment. Frederiksen was replaced by Joseph Williams (b. Santa Monica), the son of the conductor/composer John Williams, for Fahrenheit (August 1986). Steve Porcaro quit in 1988, prior to the release of The Seventh One. In 1990, Jean-Michel Byron replaced Williams for the new recordings on Past to Present 1977-1990, then left, as Lukather became the group's lead singer. Jeff Porcaro died of a heart attack in 1992, but was featured on the group's next album, Kingdom of Desire. By this time, Toto was far more popular in Japan and Europe than at home. The group added British drummer Simon Phillips. Tambu, released in Europe in the late fall of 1995, appeared in the U.S. in June 1996. For 1999's Mindfields, Bobby Kimball returned to the lineup after a 15-year absence. The group members continued to do session work during the band's tenure, contributing significantly to the sound of mainstream pop/rock in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Madagascar 2 - Escape 2 Africa - (Sneak Peek)

In the summer of 2005, Madagascar scored big with both domestic and international audiences, racking up more than half-a-billion dollars at the worldwide box office, making it the top family comedy of the year. Once the fancy-footed lion, quick talking zebra, anxiety-ridden giraffe and smart n saucy hippo were released into theaters around the globe, these four New York friends—better known as Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria—became the most popular quartet of the season. So now, the November 2008 reappearance of the zoosters is considered to be one of the most highly-anticipated returns of the season. Armed with some of the most well-regarded African-American performers in the business—comic giant Chris Rock; the versatile and gorgeous Jada Pinkett Smith (along with her spunky daughter, Willow); multifaceted Cedric The Entertainer; the hugely talented and sorely missed Bernie Mac; and the couldnt-be-hotter recording artist will.i.am—Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is loaded and ready to hit theaters this fall. For director Eric Darnell, working with such a star-studded and talented cast was reason enough for making the film. He explains, We just give these guys a chance to do what they do best—to just become these characters and let stuff come out. We just get incredible, hilarious—and sometimes touching—stuff. You know, its the best seat in town. Theres no place youd rather be than on the other side of the glass during a recording session. Its better than any theater or playhouse. For Marty the zebra, as embodied by Chris Rock, this time around its about connecting with his roots. Crash landing on the mainland of Africa may, at first glance, look like a big problem. But for someone whos never actually met any other of his own kind, having lived the majority of his life in the Central Park Zoo, it turns out to be a dream come true. Chris Rock says, There are people in this world who always think that theres something bigger and better than what they got. Not that Marty doesnt appreciate his friends and all that, but he has it in his head that running with his kind is the ultimate. I mean, it stands to reason—hes a rockin guy, so why wouldnt the party be even better if he was surrounded by a lot of other cool dudes who share his interests? On the surface, that logic holds true. The old adage of the more, the merrier. But really, everybody looking, acting, sounding exactly like you? Rock adds, Its like, if your best friend starts acting like you—dressing like you do, talking like you. At first, its probably an ego booster, right, imitation and flattery, whatever. But then, it would start to get irritating and pretty soon youd probably start considering the use of a firearm. Now take that and multiply it by hundreds—all of em acting exactly like Marty. No wonder the guy has a breakdown. How are you you when everyone else is you as well? Gloria the hippo has no issues with her individuality and self-worth. Shes well aware of who she is—shes self-confident, sassy and sweet. Jada Pinkett Smith was enthusiastic to return the character she originated in Madagascar: That film was the first movie of mine my kids could actually watch. Also, I think its always important for women to see various images of themselves and understand that its all about what you project from the inside out. Gloria has so much confidence and really just loves who she is. I would hope both films send a message to young girls that its about how you perceive yourself thats really important. In this movie, I get to have fun, and also maybe send a little message. Having been to Africa with her husband and family, Pinkett Smith is awestruck by the country: Africa is a very hard place to describe. Its almost more of a feeling that it gives you versus any observation of it. I mean, its magnificently beautiful—I actually went on a safari. My husband says it better than I ever can when he says, God visits every place else in the worldbut actually lives in Africa. And thats the only way I can really explain it—its very spiritual, and you just feel very rooted. As a lot of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa deals with roots and identity, it is probably expected that moviegoers will get to see a glimpse of the characters as baby animals. And who better to play a baby Gloria than Pinkett Smiths own daughter, Willow Smith? Filmmakers were impressed with Willows self-assurance and sass, something she shares with her mother. Like her mother, the recording sessions also proved to be a playground for fun. Willow Smith reasons, Because the lineslike if we mess up, its really, really fun, because I laugh, and then they laughand then its really fun.
