Michael McDowell's crash on his second qualifying lap at Texas Motor Speedway on 4 APR 2008. He was qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race to be held on 6 APR 2008. His speed when he lost control was estimated at 185mph, and his speed at impact is estimated to have been 165mph. Following the horrific impact, his car rolled at least 8 times before coming to rest. 30 seconds after coming to a stop, Michael McDowell exited the destroyed vehicle with no apparent injuries, save for a slight limp. This is a testament to the strict safety mandates that NASCAR has implemented for driver restraint, the new car design (COT), and the S.A.F.E.R. barrier systems lining the outer walls (and some inner walls) of all Sprint Cup race venues.
