This is the first step 1 and part 1 of my tutorial on how to solve a 5x5 5x5x5 Rubik's Cube Professor. The second part covers how to finish the remaining 4 centers. I have placed the link to the second part in the VIDEO RESPONSES section for THIS video. This part introduces new component descriptions and concepts for solving the 5x5 Rubik's Professor, since there are many more pieces than a regular cube and also more than a 4x4. However, solving the 5x5 is VERY similar to the 4x4, so you should not have that much difficulty getting adjusted to having more edges and center pieces. Notation Review/Examples: R = Outer Right face clockwise u = inner Up face clockwise (Ll)' = Both Outer and Inner left faces counter-clockwise (Rr)2 = Both Outer and Inner Right faces 180 degrees The main pieces that make up the center 3x3 block are (what I call them): -Middle Center Piece (the axis piece or middlemost part of each side). This color of this piece designates the color to the side it is on. There is only one per side. - Side/Edge Center Pieces - These basically flank the middle center piece, forming what looks like a cross when they are aligned properly next to the middle center piece. There are four of these pieces per side. - Corner Center Pieces - these pieces are on the 'corners' of the 3x3 center block. There are also four of these pieces as well. What we will be doing this part of the centers (part 1) is positioning/placing the first two centers of the 5x5 cube. I use white for my bottom and yellow for my top, solving the white center first. To create the centers, we will be making 2x1 blocks (as we did in the 4x4) and joining three of them together to form a 2x3 block. We will then be joining a 3x1 block to that 2x3 block to form the 3x3 center. To make the 2x1 blocks, we will first need to join an edge center piece with the middle center piece to form the first 2x1 block. This step goes over the remaining 2 parity error cases (*There are really 3 more, but we basically skip the corners parity error when using my Step 6 algorithm) that you may see when solving the 4x4 and also shows how to solve the 4x4 as a 3x3 cube thus allowing you to finish solving the cube completely! **IMPORTANT** FOR MOST OF THE 3X3 ALGORITHMS, THERE ARE CERTAIN WAYS YOU MUST POSITION THE CUBE BEFORE YOU PERFORM THE ALGORITHM. I DO NOT GO INTO DETAIL ON HOW TO PERFORM THESE MOVES AND SO HAVE INCLUDED THE STEPS IN THE 3X3 TUTORIAL WHICH CORRESPOND TO THESE MOVES. PLEASE SEE MY 3X3 TUTORIAL FOR MORE DETAILS IF YOU ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY USING MY ALGORITHMS. THANK YOU! *NOTE* If you do NOT use my 3x3 method to solve the 4x4, you may come across a FOURTH parity error. This error affects the position and/or orientation of the top CORNER pieces. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO is use the algorithm I have listed below and also demonstrated in THIS tutorial...the one that corresponds to STEP 6 of my 3x3 tutorial. That algorithm to CORRECT CORNER PARITY is R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2 That will CORRECT any CORNER parity case you may have. If you are UNSURE of how to use that algorithm exactly, please see my step 6 of my 3x3 tutorial. Algorithms (IN ORDER): Interchanging the two parity cases you see before finishing the top face (from step 4 of 3x3 tutorial). *If you have the 2x3 block, you want to hold it horizontally so that the 2x3 is all the way to the LEFT on the TOP face (see video*)- Orienting Last Layer (OLL) F U R U' R' F' ____________________________________________ Flipping over the top edge piece (the second PARITY case we see)*Hold the flipped edge pair on the FRONT face in the TOP middle edge pair position (see video*)- Orienting the Last Layer (OLL) - **ONLY SEEN IN 4X4 and also 5x5 cubes** (Rr)2 B2 U2 (Ll) U2 (Rr)' U2 (Rr) U2 F2 (Rr) F2 (Ll)' B2 (Rr)2 ____________________________________________ Finishing the top face (3x3 tutorial step 5)- Orienting the Last Layer (OLL) R U R' U R U2 R' ____________________________________________ Positioning Top Corners (3x3 tutorial step 6)- Permuting Last Layer (PLL)***IMPORTANT NOTE*** THIS MOVE ALSO CORRECTS ANY CORNER PARITY ERROR YOU HAVE. If you are unsure of exactly how to use it, please see my step 6 of my 3x3 tutorial. You can clearly see The Sadman botching a basic baseball slide and missing Bobby Lashey by about 1 foot. I'm not quite sure if it's Lashley's error, but still... rather pathetic. A few seconds later, we can CLEARLY hear Tommy Dreamer calling for a "double suplex, double suplex." Although this might have been a WWE production error (mic was too loud, etc), Dreamer being the "vet" that is he, should have known better. Called moves are typically whispered. You be the judge. TO THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP SAYING THAT THE SUBTITLES ARE WRONG: DON'T YOU GET IT, of course they are wrong! I tried to translate his errors as good as I could to show people who don't speak German why the whole thing was so awesome. For the most part, his words were German, but grammar and word order were Italian and I tried to transfer that more or less 1:1 into English. And no, I am not trying to make fun of Trapattoni. This press conference was brilliant, it took a lot of courage to do what he did with the little German he knew. And it had the effect he was going for. And by the way, criticism is always welcome and I am not saying that I am not making any mistakes. But please, some comments, really now, you want to talk about my errors but you can't get even one English sentence right yourself? Anyway, why bother... this is fun and I had fun making it and I hope some people have fun watching it. The famous press conference, March 10th 1998. Subtitled for all who always wondered what he was saying. Or trying to say. I tried to keep the translation as close as I could to what he said in German. It's hard to translate all the errors adequately though.
