I understand your logic, but the basis of the rap song isn't the "melody" in the background. At least with a rock song, the emphasis is actually...the music! Rap is purely based on lyric and freestyle-ish

How about this. Would you consider rock music? I would. In that case, say there's a drum solo in there. I could say that drum solo wasn't music so does that mean we discard the whole song? The spoken part of rap is basically rhythm, like drums, but most rap songs have a melody in the background. Therefore, are you saying that the whole rap song can be thrown out and the rock song can't?

I am exposed to rap all the time, thankfully not on a daily basis. Most of them? I Would say a minority has a good melody.

have you actually ever listen to a rap song? Most of em have a really good melody going on in the background.

There is actually melody in classical? As for screamo, you could argue it being on the same level as rap, but at least there is more melody in the background than the same 4 seconds of random stuff in rap.

In that case I can say that screamer is just a bunch of random noise or classical is just a bunch of fancy noise. I've got the 4 billion people who like rap music behind me to back me up. I personally don't like rap and think its junk, but I have no doubt that its music.

So you're saying that rap, which is just a talked out poem, is considered music? The only reason why people consider it music is because the dudes make a 4 second musical pattern in the BG with a beat, if you want to consider that real music.

Music: any agreeable (pleasing and harmonious) sounds I think some people find rapping pleasing and harmonious

Exactly my point. While rap can very well be and certainly often is art, it is not music. No matter how hard to make or valueable in a commercial or cultural sense Rap is, it does not fall into the definition of music. On a sidenote, there is a huge load of crap in the rock and metal genres, too. But the amount of crap in a specific branch of art realy has nothing to do with the fact that it can or cannot be defined as music.

There's no doubt that it takes talent to actually perform rap/freestyle, but looking at a lot of stuff people actually listen to doesn't really make me convinced that it takes much talent for someone to get up and do it. To make it good, yes, it does take real talent. But what's popular doesn't seem all talented. I could be just really biased, too. heh. Regardless, music =/= rap

wrong, rapping and freestyling is actually very hard to do. That's why not everyone is a rap artist. It takes a very well-trained mouth to rap and a very talented person to coordinate the mouth the brain. Also, it takes alot of wit to freestyle, so you can't say that there is no talent in rap at all.

The only "talent" within rap is just the name it actually is: a simple poem. You can even argue that a lot of it doesn't take much talent to do anyways.

I second that motion. Attacking rap and equal shity stuff alongside your statement was the wrong move, thou. Your message will get buried in the flamewar now. Kinda silly considering that rap does never demand and rarely involve real singing or playing musical instruments (no dear fellows, computers ain't some such instruments) and thus does not qualify as being music in the first place....
